C: camping

Every year while I was growing up, my family and I would load up our big blue van and head to the K.O.A. (Kampground of America) in Santa Cruz, which is so far removed from actual camping that they had to spell it with a "K". Let me list some of the amenities found at this facility:

--pool & spa
--convenience store (food, clothing, toys, hygiene products, etc.)
--laundry mat
--bingo hall
--electrical / water outlets at each site

The list goes on, but I think you get the idea. So the thing that made this camping was A) sleeping in a tent and B) there were trees and a fire. Other than that, not exactly rouging it.

Don't get me wrong, I had a great time! We would play Yahtzee! for hours (we played so much that we added our own category to the score sheets), swim and talk...it was necessary family bonding.

But the real gem of this experience was one time, that I will never forget (and I will never let my sister live down) when I simply wanted to rent one of the tandem bikes that were available. You see, she was able to bring a friend along on the camping trips because she was about six years older than I am. Well, being the typical older sister, she wouldn't go with me and that is when the following entry in my Mickey Mouse diary was born:

"Niki is so mean! I don't know why Jennie (her friend) even likes her! Today, I wanted to rent a tandem bike but they wouldn't ride with me. So I rented one with me and I."

Yes, I was a grammar freak even back then, though choosing the appropriate phrase to refer to yourself twice is difficult (especially at the age of eleven)...
